Heads-up game between Doug Polek and Tom Dwan will highlight the first round of matches in $ 22, World Poker Tour heads-up championship.
The entire first round was drawn live on the Polk YouTube channel on Monday afternoon to settle the matches against some of the best poker players as well as a handful of celebrities, influencers and several online qualifiers.
The event will take place on the Poker King platform, but production staff and many players will be located in Cabo San Lucas. The entire tournament will be broadcast on Twitch with the first round kicking off on June 18 with the finals ending on June 22.
Of the 32 players on the field, only the top four players will get the cash. Winning three matches will guarantee you win "in-the-money". The first four matches will be a streak of up to three where each player will have to beat their opponent twice to advance. However, the finals will be played in a win-of-five format.
There are a few influencers and celebrities on the left side of the ladder. In addition to the Polk / Dwan duel, on the left is high-stakes pro Dan Smith battling with famous DJ Steve Aoki, Patrik Antonius will face Japanese pop star "GAKT" and Alexandra Botez from "Hafu" in battle streamers. Poker vlogger Brad Owen will also face poker pro Daniel Dvoress on the left.
Botez is a chess prodigy, YouTuber and Twitch streamer who has been involved in poker for the past few years. "Hafu", whose real name is Rumay Wang, is a former professional Massachusetts player who is also a bit new to poker. She was a professional competitor for World of Warcraft, Bloodline Champions and Hearthstone.
Everyone on the field earned $22, but this match has a bit more weight as the three streamers in the field, Botez, Hafu and "Shiphtur" are part of a separate $18, it takes longer.
Shiphtur, real name Danny Le, is a former professional League of Legends player. He tied the right side of the bracket to face three WPT champion and two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Anthony Zinno in the first round.
If Zinno wins his match against Shiphtur, the winner of the Botez / Hafu match will immediately win the last longer match and get an extra $22 on top of what they potentially earn.
With a lot of influencers and celebrities paired on the left side, the right side of the bracket has become a much more difficult path to victory and will have some top pros fighting in the first round.
The two online qualifiers, who secured their seats in the Poker King steps tournament, will face a four-fold WPT champion Darren Elias and online pro "ButtonClickr". Clickr was one of the coaches who teamed up with Doug Polek in his $ 1.2 million win against Daniel Negreanu. On Monday's stream, Polk said he was the closest poker miracle right now, having already won a million online by the time he was 20.
Other important matches on the right are: Linus Loeliger with Olivier Busquet, Nick Schulman with Chris Kruk, Nick Petrangelo with Wiktor "Limitless" Malinowski and Phil Ivey with German pro Manig Loeser.
