According to the report Business Insider Doral city council voted 4-0 to ban gambling within the city limits. The city is home to Trump National Doral Miami, a golf resort owned by the former president and run by his son Eric.
In March, the younger Trump said Washington Post
that he was hoping to convert the property into a casino to increase revenues from a run-down golf facility. When Governor Ron DeSantis agreed the next month for a new Seminole gaming CD, it opened the door for Trump to make that desire a reality.
As part of a new agreement that will legalize sports betting and expand the game options at Seminole casinos, if handed over at federal level, the Seminole tribe has waived their right to oppose the issuance of a state gambling license for any property that is greater than 15 miles from the casino owned by to Seminole.
Trump National Doral Miami barely reaches that threshold, and the tribe would have no legal way to stop
Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber said Miami Herald
that the 029 milestone was strategically placed by DeSantis to help the Trump family establish a casino in the state. "Of course, the fact that the 15-mile barrier has been included in the compact is pretty good expression in the governor's and legislator's tent to give him what he wants," said Gelber. Donald Trump owned casinos in Atlantic City, Indiana, and California as part of Trump Entertainment Resorts, which filed for bankruptcy three times before being eventually bought by billionaire Carl Icahn in 2016. Earlier this year, Icahn destroyed one of Trump's former Atlantic City casinos when the Trump Plaza Hotel & Casino exploded in a controlled demolition in February. He sold the Trump Taj Mahal to Hard Rock International in 2016, which later became Hard Rock Atlantic City.
